DNA Tests Planned for Orangutans at Nandankanan Zoo

DNA samples to be collected soon; health of rescued orangutans improves under 24-hour monitoring at Nandankanan

The Odisha Forest and Environment Department is preparing to conduct DNA tests on the orangutans currently housed at Nandankanan Zoological Park to determine more details about their origin.

Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia said the department has contacted the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in connection with the DNA testing. Samples of the orangutans are expected to be collected soon and sent for examination.

The DNA test results could provide greater clarity about the origin of the orangutans and help determine the country from which they may have come. The findings will also be shared with the Government of India, the Minister said.

Health of Orangutans Improves

Meanwhile, the health condition of the orangutans at Nandankanan has reportedly improved. Minister Khuntia said the animals are responding well to treatment and that Odisha’s climate is proving suitable for them.

According to the Minister, the orangutans are being kept under regular medical observation. Veterinary specialists from Mysuru are also attending to their healthcare needs. Special care is being provided to the young animals, while a 24-hour monitoring system has been put in place to keep a close watch on their health.

Orangutans Rescued from Balasore

The young orangutans were rescued from Balasore on September 8 and subsequently brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park.

During blood tests conducted on September 17, the animals were found to be suffering from anaemia. They were subsequently administered necessary injections to help improve their blood parameters.

A technical committee constituted by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) has been monitoring their health and providing recommendations regarding their treatment and care.

The upcoming DNA examination is expected to provide important scientific information about the animals and assist authorities in establishing their origin. Further action will be taken based on the test findings and other available evidence.
