Eastern Railway Issues Strict Warning Against Dangerous Railway Stunts and Selfies
Eastern Railway urges public, especially youth, to avoid risky selfies and stunts on tracks and moving trains, warning of strict legal action.
The Eastern Railway has launched a strict awareness campaign warning the public—especially young people and social media enthusiasts—against taking selfies or shooting videos near railway tracks, on moving trains, or on footboards and rooftops. Such dangerous and illegal practices not only risk lives but also constitute a punishable offense under the Railways Act, 1989.
Rising Trend of Risky Railway Stunts
The campaign comes in response to a concerning trend where individuals, seeking social media fame, put their own lives and railway operations at risk. Many such incidents have previously resulted in serious and sometimes fatal accidents. Eastern Railway emphasized that railway tracks and moving trains are not entertainment venues but high-risk operational areas. Unauthorized access or performing stunts in these areas is both life-threatening and legally punishable.
Strict Enforcement by Railway Authorities
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been instructed to follow a zero-tolerance policy against violators. Legal action will be swift and strict. Individuals found taking photos or videos near moving trains, or entering railway tracks illegally, will face action under Sections 147 and 153 of the Railways Act, 1989, which may include both imprisonment and fines.
Public Advised to Prioritize Safety
Eastern Railway urges all citizens, particularly students and teenagers, to understand and follow safety guidelines. Life is far more valuable than a social media post. The public is strongly advised never to venture onto railway tracks for any reason, as trains move at high speeds and cover distances faster than perceived.
Actions like climbing onto moving trains, riding on footboards, or shooting videos on train roofs or engines are extremely dangerous. Contact with high-voltage overhead electric lines (OHE) can be fatal. Safe distance should always be maintained on platforms, especially when a train is approaching or passing.
Parental and Teacher Guidance Critical
Parents and educators are urged to educate children and teenagers about the risks of performing railway stunts for online fame. Life should never be jeopardized for temporary social media attention.
Awareness Campaign Strengthened
To prevent tragic incidents, Eastern Railway is intensifying its awareness campaign through public announcements, digital media, and physical patrolling. The railway authorities request everyone to prioritize safety over social media stunts.
