Google Expands Android Earthquake Alerts to Over 200 Countries and Regions
Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System now covers over 200 countries and regions, using smartphone sensors to warn users of potential strong tremors seconds before they arrive.
Your Android smartphone could provide crucial warnings during an earthquake, potentially giving you a few seconds to protect yourself before strong tremors arrive. Google has expanded its Android Earthquake Alerts System to more than 200 countries and regions, improving access to earthquake early-warning technology worldwide.
Launched in 2021, the service has delivered more than one billion earthquake-related alerts to Android users. It was previously available in 98 countries, according to the information provided.
How Does the Technology Work?
The system uses accelerometers built into Android smartphones to detect movements that may indicate an earthquake. These sensors, commonly used to detect phone movement and rotate screens, can also register earthquake-like vibrations.
When multiple smartphones in an area detect similar movements, the data is analysed to identify a possible earthquake. The system can then send alerts to nearby users before stronger shaking reaches them.
However, the technology does not predict earthquakes before they begin. Instead, it detects early signals after an earthquake starts and attempts to warn people before stronger tremors arrive.
Three Types of Earthquake Alerts
Google’s system provides different alerts depending on the expected shaking and potential risk. These include ‘Be Aware’ for lighter shaking, ‘Be Ready’ for more significant shaking and ‘Take Action’ for situations requiring immediate protective measures.
The most urgent alerts may override a phone’s Do Not Disturb settings and sound a loud alarm.
How to Enable Earthquake Alerts
Android users should ensure that internet connectivity, location services and earthquake alert settings are enabled on their devices.
Although the system can provide valuable seconds to seek protection, alerts are not guaranteed in every situation. People should follow established earthquake safety guidelines and remain prepared for emergencies.
