BJP Legislature Party Elects Himanta Biswa Sarma as Leader

Himanta Biswa Sarma is all set to take oath once again as the Chief Minister of Assam after being unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party. The decision was taken during the BJP legislators’ meeting held on Sunday following the party’s massive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

The announcement of Sarma’s name was made by senior BJP leader J. P. Nadda. Known for his strategic political skills and development-oriented governance, Sarma will now lead the state government for a second consecutive term.

BJP Appoints Observers for Leadership Selection

To oversee the selection of the legislature party leader, the Bharatiya Janata Party had appointed J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as central observers.

During the meeting of BJP MLAs in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma was formally elected as the leader of the legislative party, clearing the path for the formation of the new government in the state.

Sarma Had Resigned on May 6

Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma had resigned from the post of Chief Minister on May 6, paving the way for the constitutional process of government formation after the election results.

With the BJP securing another landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, Sarma is now set to return as Chief Minister for a consecutive second term.

Grand Swearing-In Ceremony Likely on May 12

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be held on May 12 at 11 AM at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati.

Several top national leaders are likely to attend the event, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior BJP leaders.

Sources indicate that Chief Ministers from nearly 22 states across the country have also been invited to the ceremony, making it one of the biggest political events in Assam in recent years.

BJP’s Continued Dominance in Assam

The BJP first came to power in Assam in 2016 under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal. Later in 2021, Himanta Biswa Sarma took over as Chief Minister and led the party with an aggressive development and governance agenda.

Now, after registering another massive electoral victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP has once again strengthened its hold over Assam politics.

Focus on Development and Governance

Political analysts believe Sarma’s return to power reflects the public’s confidence in his leadership and governance model. Over the past few years, his government has focused on infrastructure development, law and order, welfare schemes and investment promotion in Assam.

As the new government prepares to take charge, expectations are high regarding the continuation of development projects and further strengthening of Assam’s economic growth.
