India Steps Up as Oil Crisis Hits South Asia: Sri Lanka’s Gratitude Leaves Pakistani Analyst Boiling
India Emerges as Reliable Energy Partner, Steps Up Fuel Supply to Neighbors Amid Global Crisis
As the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict disrupts global oil supply chains and pushes energy prices higher, India has emerged as a dependable partner for neighboring countries facing fuel shortages. The country’s swift response has been widely appreciated across South Asia.
Sri Lanka Praises India’s Swift Assistance
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgently sending 38,000 metric tonnes of fuel to Colombo.
The fuel supply, coordinated with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, helped ease the pressure on Sri Lanka’s energy crisis and was praised for its speed and efficiency.
Support Extended to Maldives and Nepal
India’s assistance was not limited to Sri Lanka. Similar support has also been extended to the Maldives and Nepal, reinforcing India’s image as a reliable regional partner during times of crisis.
This proactive approach has strengthened diplomatic ties and showcased India’s ability to respond quickly to urgent regional needs.
Growing Regional Goodwill for India
India’s swift action has earned it widespread appreciation, with many observers highlighting its role as a stabilizing force in South Asia.
The move is being seen as a reflection of India’s growing influence and its commitment to maintaining regional stability during global disruptions.
Pakistan Expert Raises Concerns Over Missed Opportunity
In contrast, Pakistani strategic expert Dr Qamar Cheema expressed concern over Islamabad’s response to the crisis.
He criticized Pakistan for not taking a more proactive approach to assist neighboring countries, arguing that it has missed a strategic opportunity to expand its regional influence.
Call for Stronger Engagement with Iran
Cheema emphasized that Pakistan should better utilize its ties with Iran to address fuel-related needs in the region. He pointed out that Pakistani vessels are already permitted limited passage through the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting untapped potential for energy cooperation.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Challenges
Cheema also noted that Pakistan is gaining international attention for its diplomatic engagements, including talks with countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey.
However, he stressed that domestic economic challenges remain a major concern, limiting Pakistan’s ability to act decisively in regional crises.
India Gains, Pakistan Seeks Direction
The contrasting approaches highlight a clear difference in strategy—while India is actively delivering fuel and strengthening ties, Pakistan is still exploring ways to enhance its regional role.
As the global crisis continues, India’s swift and practical assistance is reinforcing its position as a trusted and reliable partner in South Asia.
