Thrilling Super Over Drama: India Edges Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2025 Nail-Biter
India Triumphs in Super Over Thriller Against Sri Lanka
A Rare Tie in Asia Cup History
In a dramatic showdown, India advanced to the next stage of the tournament after defeating Sri Lanka in a Super Over thriller. Both teams had finished with identical scores of 202/5 in 20 overs, marking only the second tie in Asia Cup history. The previous instance occurred in 2018 between India and Afghanistan, though that ODI ended without a Super Over.
Arshdeep Singh Holds Nerve in the Super Over
India’s pacer Arshdeep Singh was handed the ball for the Super Over. His very first delivery dismissed Kusal Perera, who cut a short ball straight into the keeper’s hands. Kamindu Mendis managed a single, but the real drama unfolded on the fourth delivery when Dasun Shanaka missed the ball.
Wicketkeeper Sanju Samson attempted a stumping, which initially looked successful but was later overturned as “not out.” A wide added to the tension, but Arshdeep bounced back strongly, dismissing Shanaka on the very next ball. Sri Lanka could only manage 2 runs in the Super Over.
Yadav Finishes in Style
Chasing just 3 runs for victory, India sent Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill to the crease against Wanindu Hasaranga. Yadav wasted no time, smashing the first ball for three runs, sealing the match in spectacular fashion.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time Yadav showed his Super Over dominance. In a July 2024 T20I against Sri Lanka, he had struck a boundary off the very first ball of the Super Over, displaying his trademark flair.
India Marches to the Final
With this victory, India maintained their unbeaten streak in the Asia Cup and secured a spot in the final against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 28. The Super Over finish not only thrilled fans but also reinforced India’s dominance in crunch situations.
