Embassy Sets Up Emergency Helpline as Rescue Teams Continue Search Operations Near Phu Quoc
At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat carrying Indian visitors capsized near Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam on Saturday, according to reports from local authorities and international news agencies. The Embassy of India in Hanoi has confirmed the incident and established emergency control rooms to assist affected families.
According to Vietnamese authorities, the speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, close to Phu Quoc. Search and rescue operations are continuing as officials work to locate any missing passengers and determine the exact cause of the accident.
In a statement posted on X, the Indian Embassy described the incident as tragic and said it is closely coordinating with Vietnamese authorities. The Embassy and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City have set up dedicated control rooms to provide information and assistance to victims’ families.
The Indian mission has also issued emergency helpline numbers for those seeking assistance. Officials said embassy staff remain available to respond to queries and support affected Indian nationals.
According to local media reports, the speedboat was travelling from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi Port when it capsized about 400 metres from the shore. Preliminary reports indicate that rough sea conditions and high waves may have contributed to the accident, although the exact cause is under investigation.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations and has witnessed a steady rise in Indian tourist arrivals in recent years.
Vietnamese authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, while rescue teams continue operations at the accident site. The Indian Embassy said it is monitoring the situation closely and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
The tragedy has cast a shadow over the growing popularity of Vietnam as a preferred overseas destination for Indian travellers, with authorities focusing on rescue efforts and support for the victims’ families.
