The Indian Navy has successfully rescued the fishing vessel ‘Azhini’ from armed Somali pirates following an operation that lasted nearly 48 hours. All 20 crew members aboard the vessel were safely rescued during the operation. No casualties or injuries were reported.

The fishing vessel was hijacked last month by a group of armed pirates off the northeastern coast of Somalia. The incident raised serious concerns over maritime security, as there were fears that the pirates could use the hijacked vessel as a ‘mother ship’ to launch further attacks on commercial vessels operating in the region.

Indian Navy Demonstrates Its Operational Strength

Taking the threat seriously, the Indian Navy deployed a warship to carry out the rescue operation. A maritime surveillance aircraft also provided support, enabling the forces to continuously monitor and track the hijacked vessel.

After identifying the vessel, the Navy closely monitored its movements and used non-lethal methods to intercept it and prevent the pirates from escaping.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) also played a crucial role in the operation by precisely air-dropping commandos from its C-17 aircraft. This significantly strengthened the Marine Commandos’ operational capabilities and provided additional support to the naval forces.

Through a swift and coordinated tactical operation, the Indian Navy successfully took control of the hijacked vessel, neutralised the pirate threat and rescued all 20 crew members safely.

According to the Indian Navy, the successful mission demonstrates its high level of operational preparedness and the ability of different defence forces to work together in executing complex maritime security operations.

The operation also reflects India’s commitment to maintaining its position as a preferred security partner and first responder in the Indian Ocean Region.

The Navy reiterated its commitment to protecting seafarers, securing vital maritime trade routes and maintaining a safe, secure and stable maritime environment across the Indian Ocean Region.
