Indian Women’s Hockey Team Eyes Historic Finish at FIH World Cup 2026

The Indian women’s hockey team is set to face Germany in the 5th-6th place classification match at the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026 on Thursday, aiming to end its campaign with the country’s best-ever World Cup finish since 1974.

India have impressed throughout the tournament with a resilient performance, losing only once in five matches. The team held higher-ranked opponents, including China, England and Australia, to draws and registered its biggest-ever World Cup victory with a commanding 6-1 win over South Africa.

India’s only defeat came against defending champions the Netherlands, who secured a 2-0 victory. The Indian side finished third in the second stage after a series of closely contested matches, narrowly missing out on a semi-final berth.

Germany have also had a competitive campaign, defeating Scotland and the USA in the opening stage before beating Spain in the second round. Their defeat against Belgium pushed them into the 5th-6th place classification match.

India head coach Sjoerd Marijne acknowledged the team’s progress but said the players remain hungry for more. He stressed the need to convert attacking opportunities into goals against Germany.

India’s defence has been a major strength, with goalkeepers Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam delivering impressive performances. Captain Salima Tete has also played a key role with crucial defensive blocks.

A victory against Germany would secure India’s best World Cup finish in more than five decades and provide a significant boost to the growth of women’s hockey in the country.
