Jual Oram Announces Retirement from Electoral Politics, Ends Glorious Three-Decade Career

In a major development in Odisha’s political landscape, Union Tribal Affairs Minister and senior BJP leader Jual Oram officially announced his retirement from electoral politics on Saturday. Speaking at a public meeting in Sambalpur, the 63-year-old veteran and sitting MP from Sundargarh declared he would no longer contest elections, bringing down the curtain on a political journey spanning over three decades.

“I have contested ten elections—five as an MLA and five as an MP. Now it’s time for the younger generation to take over. I will continue to mentor and support the party,” Oram said, expressing his commitment to guide new leaders and contribute in a non-electoral capacity.

A Legacy Rooted in Tribal Representation

Oram, one of Odisha’s most prominent tribal leaders, has been instrumental in the rise of the BJP in the state. After joining the party in 1989, he made his electoral debut by winning the Bonai Assembly constituency in 1990, serving two terms as MLA. In 1998, he transitioned to national politics and went on to win the Sundargarh Lok Sabha seat six times, including in the last three general elections—2014, 2019, and 2024.

His appointment in 1999 as the first-ever Union Tribal Affairs Minister during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government marked a milestone in India’s tribal policymaking. His contributions in that role laid the groundwork for many welfare schemes that continue under the Narendra Modi-led administration.

A Strategic Exit Amid BJP’s Ascendancy in Odisha

Oram’s retirement comes at a time when the BJP has strengthened its foothold in Odisha, ending the 24-year reign of Naveen Patnaik’s BJD by securing victory in the 2024 state elections. While stepping away from contesting polls, Oram emphasized that he remains devoted to the BJP and is open to serving in other capacities, including a Rajya Sabha seat or even a gubernatorial role, if offered by the party leadership.

Architect of Change and a Mentor Ahead

A former BJP state president and once leader of the opposition in the Odisha assembly, Oram has been a driving force in shaping the party’s tribal outreach. His decision to retire is seen as a strategic move to usher in a generational shift within the party. Though he has not detailed his future plans, his enduring influence as a policy advocate and grassroots leader remains undisputed.

Curtain Falls, But the Legacy Lives On

With Jual Oram’s exit from electoral politics, Odisha loses a towering figure whose leadership extended beyond political victories to deep social impact, especially in tribal-dominated regions. As the BJP navigates a new phase of governance in the state, Oram’s legacy as a pioneer of tribal empowerment and party-building will continue to shape its future course.
