In a major development in the tragic student suicide near Pattamundai railway station, Kendrapada police on Thursday arrested the prime accused, Pramod Behera, son of Ganeswar Behera and a resident of Teroi village in Bilikana Panchayat. He was brought to Kendrapada for interrogation over the death of a young woman who allegedly took her own life following prolonged harassment and blackmail.

Months of Harassment and Blackmail

Police sources revealed that the victim, reportedly Pramod’s former girlfriend, endured seven to eight months of relentless bullying. Pramod allegedly circulated her compromising photographs on social media and used them to blackmail her even after their relationship ended. Under this sustained intimidation, the victim allegedly doused herself in kerosene and set herself ablaze while alone at home.

Police Inaction Under Scrutiny

The victim’s family claims they had approached the police earlier, but instead of registering a First Information Report (FIR), an Assistant Sub-Inspector allegedly advised them to block Pramod on social media. The father of the victim says he had sent a written complaint, but the police initially refused to launch an inquiry. The alleged inaction has sparked anger and demands for an internal review of police conduct.

Suspicious Circumstances Around Death

Neighbours have reported disturbing details: the victim’s burnt body was found in a locked room with her hands allegedly tied with a cable. Locals question how she could have set herself on fire under such conditions. The presence of a rope around her wrists and a locked door has fuelled speculation that her death may not have been a straightforward suicide.

Public Outrage and Call for Justice

Residents and activists are calling for a thorough probe to uncover the truth. While the arrest of Pramod Behera marks a critical step in the investigation, unanswered questions about the missing complaint letter, alleged police negligence, and suspicious evidence at the crime scene continue to drive public outrage.
