Investigation Ordered Into Disappearance of Infants

A serious controversy has emerged at SCB Medical College and Hospital Cuttack after allegations surfaced that around 16 newborn babies have gone missing from the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology department over the past six years.

According to reports, the Central Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter, raising concerns over possible lapses in hospital administration and record-keeping.

Allegations of Missing Records and Lack of Information

The complaint suggests that between 2019 and 2025, approximately 16 newborns could not be traced, and surprisingly, there is no clear documentation or record available with the hospital authorities or the Cuttack Municipal Corporation regarding their whereabouts.

This absence of data has intensified suspicion and raised questions about internal monitoring systems within the hospital.

Concerns Over Possible Trafficking Network

The allegations have also triggered fears of a possible illegal child trafficking network operating behind the scenes. However, authorities have not confirmed any such criminal linkage at this stage, and the matter remains under investigation.

Activists claim that vulnerable mothers, including destitute and mentally ill women admitted to the hospital, may have been particularly at risk if any wrongdoing occurred.

Whistleblower Raises Alarm

An RTI activist, Achyuta Sahu, is reported to have brought the issue into public attention. He has alleged serious procedural lapses and has urged top state officials, including the Chief Secretary and Health Secretary, to intervene.

He has also pointed out that under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, newborns of vulnerable women should be under strict protection and supervision of child welfare authorities.

Official Inquiry Underway

Following the complaint, the RDC has directed the SCB Hospital Superintendent to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a detailed report. Authorities have also been asked to take strict action if any irregularities or negligence are found.

Questions Over Hospital Safety Systems

The incident has raised significant concerns about security protocols and administrative oversight in one of Odisha’s largest and most important medical institutions.

As the investigation proceeds, officials have stated that the exact fate of the missing newborns will only be clear after a detailed verification of records and facts.

Awaiting Clarity

At this stage, the case remains under investigation, and no official conclusion has been drawn regarding what exactly happened to the alleged missing newborns.
