Odisha Government Launches Road Repair Drive Ahead of Durga Puja

As the festive season approaches, the Odisha government is stepping up efforts to ensure state roads are in top condition ahead of the highly anticipated Durga Puja celebrations. Following monsoon damage that left urban roads riddled with potholes and accident-prone, authorities have ordered all repair work to be completed by October 20, promising safer and smoother travel for residents of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and other cities.

Urban Roads in Poor Condition

The deteriorating state of roads in the capital and other urban centres has become a growing concern. Waterlogging and crater-like potholes have made daily commutes difficult, with two-wheelers flipping and cars stalling in muddy areas. Citizens have demanded urgent government action to prevent accidents and ease travel, especially as the festive season nears.

Government’s Time-Bound Road Repair Plan

The repair programme was finalised at a meeting chaired by PWD Minister Prithviraj Harichandan at Nirman Soudha. Attendees included MLAs from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, mayors, municipal commissioners, and senior PWD officials. Harichandan assured that all roads in municipal corporations and municipalities would be repaired before the festivities start, with work already underway in consultation with local civic bodies.

Statewide Road Restoration Efforts

The project extends beyond Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, covering all city localities across Odisha. Authorities have been instructed to focus on quality and lasting solutions, not just filling potholes. The restoration aims to make roads convenient, safe, and aesthetically pleasing for tourists visiting during the Puja season.

Residents and Businesses Welcome the Initiative

Local residents expressed relief at the news. Priya Mohanty, a Bhubaneswar resident, said, “We fear driving in the rains every year, but this repair work will make our Puja festivals safer and more enjoyable.” Local businesses also anticipate a boost in foot traffic, as smoother roads will encourage more visitors to markets and pandals during the festivities.

Deadline Adds Pressure

With less than two weeks to the October 20 deadline, the pressure is on civic authorities and contractors to deliver results. This ambitious initiative is not just about urban infrastructure improvement; it also sets an example for other states to plan ahead of major festivals. As Odisha gears up for Durga Puja, the focus on safe, smooth, and beautified roads aims to enhance the festive experience for all.
