Odisha is taking steps to boost egg production and reduce its dependence on neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to meet the growing demand for eggs in the state. With daily consumption estimated at 2.5 crore eggs against local production of around 1.2 crore, Odisha continues to depend on supplies from Andhra Pradesh to bridge the demand-supply gap.

The state government has set ambitious targets to strengthen the poultry sector and make Odisha self-sufficient in egg production. According to the targets, Odisha aims to produce 1,000 crore eggs annually by 2036 and increase production to 1,700 crore eggs by 2047.

To achieve these goals, the government has launched the Commercial Layer Farm Scheme, aimed at encouraging investment in commercial egg production and expanding the state’s poultry farming capacity.

State Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik shared details of the initiative, highlighting the enhanced subsidy support available to farmers interested in establishing poultry farms.

The minister said farmers earlier received subsidies of up to ₹1 crore under the Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana. Under the new initiative, eligible applicants setting up commercial layer farms can receive subsidies of up to ₹10 crore.

He expressed confidence that the enhanced financial assistance would encourage farmers to establish larger commercial poultry farms, increase egg production and reduce Odisha’s dependence on supplies from other states.

Odisha Needs 2.5 Crore Eggs Every Day

Odisha currently requires approximately 2.5 crore eggs daily, while its domestic production stands at around 1.2 crore eggs. This leaves a substantial gap between demand and supply, forcing the state to rely on neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to meet its requirements.

The government aims to address this shortfall by expanding commercial layer farming and providing financial incentives to prospective investors and poultry farmers.

The initiative is also expected to create opportunities in the poultry sector, encourage entrepreneurship and strengthen the state’s livestock-based economy.

With the 2036 and 2047 production targets, Odisha is seeking to transform its poultry industry and emerge as a surplus egg-producing state in the coming years.
