Dangerous Driving for Reels? Odisha Says ‘No More’
Odisha Transport Department Cracks Down on Dangerous Social Media Stunts
Rising Threat of Risky Road Stunts
In response to the surge of dangerous stunts and traffic violations on public roads, the Odisha Transport Department has launched strict action against individuals creating risky content for social media. Viral videos show youth performing perilous acts—riding without helmets, standing on moving vehicles, or carrying passengers on car rooftops—all for fleeting online fame.
These actions endanger not only the participants but also pedestrians and fellow drivers, prompting authorities to take decisive steps.
Strict Penalties for Offenders
Under the new directives, violators caught filming or sharing such content will face severe consequences, including:
-
Vehicle confiscation
-
Termination of registration certificates
-
Withdrawal of driving licenses
-
Heavy fines
The Transport Minister emphasized, “People’s lives are very precious. Only strict enforcement, not mere warnings, can stop such behaviour.”
Wider Enforcement Beyond Social Media
The crackdown is not limited to stunt videos. Authorities are also monitoring drunk driving, speeding, and other traffic violations. Road safety experts stress that enforcement alone is insufficient; public cooperation through awareness campaigns and continuous monitoring is crucial.
Alarming Statistics on Road Safety
Mobile phone use while driving has contributed to a sharp rise in traffic fatalities in Odisha. In 2023, distracted driving-related deaths increased by 35% compared to the previous year. Nationally, mobile-related accidents caused 7,558 crashes and 3,395 deaths in 2022, compared to 7,122 accidents and 2,888 fatalities in 2023.
Districts such as Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Kendujhar, and Angul have frequently reported dangerous behaviour, prompting authorities to seize multiple vehicles involved in viral stunt videos.
Promoting Responsible Digital Behaviour
While social media offers a platform for creative expression, officials urge users to act ethically and responsibly. Road safety specialists warn that without strict enforcement and deterrent regulations, accidents and fatalities will continue.
The Transport Department reassures the public that it will keep pace with digital trends and take action against violators to ensure road safety across Odisha.
