Pakistan is facing escalating political tensions after the federal government reportedly imposed an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province governed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The move comes amid growing protests demanding Khan’s release and has triggered a fresh confrontation between the federal government and the provincial leadership.

According to reports, the federal cabinet led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recommended invoking Articles 232 and 234 of the Pakistani Constitution. President Asif Ali Zardari reportedly approved the recommendation, paving the way for emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the suspension of the provincial government.

The decision has drawn criticism from PTI leaders, who have accused the federal government of attempting to suppress political opposition.

Federal Government Accuses Provincial Administration

In a statement, the Shehbaz Sharif government accused the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration of failing to adequately support the fight against terrorism.

The federal government reportedly said a review of the situation by the cabinet indicated that the provincial government was deliberately withdrawing from counterterrorism efforts.

President Zardari also shared information about the decision through a post on social media platform X.

The emergency measures have been introduced amid heightened political tensions, with PTI supporters preparing to intensify their campaign demanding Imran Khan’s release.

Mohsin Naqvi Defends Emergency Decision

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has openly supported the federal government’s decision, arguing that the deteriorating law-and-order situation left the authorities with few alternatives.

Naqvi also claimed that terrorist activities had increased by 195 per cent since March 2024. He alleged that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had distanced itself from efforts to combat terrorism.

The claims have added to the political dispute between the federal administration and the PTI-led provincial government.

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi Challenges Shehbaz Sharif

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has strongly opposed the federal government’s move and openly challenged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Afridi described the decision as an act of rebellion against the provincial government, while PTI leaders have refused to accept the federal administration’s announcement.

The development marks another major confrontation between the ruling federal coalition and Imran Khan’s party, which continues to demand the former prime minister’s release from prison.

The situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains politically sensitive, with the emergency decision likely to intensify tensions between the federal and provincial governments.
