Sonam Raghuvanshi Arrested for Husband’s Murder During Meghalaya Honeymoon; Major Conspiracy Unravelled
In a chilling turn of events, 24-year-old Sonam Raghuvanshi from Indore and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha were arrested on June 8, 2025, for plotting and executing the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, while on their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
The couple, who tied the knot on May 11, 2025, had embarked on an eight-day honeymoon trip to Meghalaya starting May 20. The vacation, however, turned into a crime scene after Raja was reported missing in Sohra (Cherrapunjee). Days later, his decomposed body was discovered near Weisawdong Falls, alongside a machete believed to be the murder weapon.
Plot Unfolds: Arrests Across States
Following an intense investigation, Meghalaya Police arrested three men—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Raj Singh Kushwaha, and Akash Rajput—from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in connection with the murder. Police say the crime was orchestrated by Raj Kushwaha, who worked in Sonam’s father’s plywood factory. Kushwaha, who is believed to be in a relationship with Sonam, allegedly masterminded the killing.
A tourist guide’s statement provided a crucial lead, claiming to have seen the couple with three unidentified men on the day of their disappearance. Sonam was later spotted acting suspiciously on CCTV footage from a hotel in Shillong. Her rented scooter was also found abandoned in Sohrarim. These clues pointed toward a premeditated murder, with Sonam suspected of planning the trip as part of the larger plot.
Eventually, Sonam surrendered at Nandganj police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, where she confessed to her role in the crime. Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang confirmed the arrests and the confessions from the accused.
Family Reactions and Public Outcry
The murder has shaken both families involved. Raja’s brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, told India Today, “Raja and Sonam would often speak on the phone. I had only heard of Raj Kushwaha by name. It’s shocking that she’s involved.”
While Raja’s family has called for a deeper investigation into the conspiracy, Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, has vehemently denied the allegations. “My daughter is innocent. The Meghalaya Police are lying,” he claimed, demanding a CBI investigation and asserting that Sonam had been framed.
Police Praised for Swift Action
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took to social media platform X to commend the state police’s quick action, stating:
“Within 7 days, #MeghalayaPolice have achieved a major breakthrough in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. Three assailants from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, and the female suspect has surrendered.”
Investigation Continues
Despite the arrests, several questions remain unanswered. Police are still searching for at least one more suspect. Authorities are preparing to bring Sonam back to Meghalaya for further interrogation and legal proceedings. As the investigation unfolds, both families await clarity and justice in what is shaping up to be one of the most disturbing murder plots in recent memory.
