Stomach Bug Hits India: Abhishek Sharma Rushed to Hospital Ahead of Namibia Match
Serious Stomach Infection Casts Doubt on T20 World Cup Participation
India’s explosive opener Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a severe stomach infection, casting serious doubt over his participation in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.
Health Scare After USA Match
According to BCCI sources, the 25-year-old top-ranked T20I batter’s condition worsened following India’s opening Group A match against the USA in Mumbai on February 7.
Abhishek, who was already battling stomach discomfort before the match, suffered a golden duck and reportedly received IV fluids due to high fever. He did not take the field during the USA innings, with Sanju Samson replacing him for the entire duration. After India’s victory, he also skipped the customary post-match handshake.
Misses Practice Ahead of Namibia Game
As his illness intensified, Abhishek missed Tuesday’s practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. India are scheduled to face Namibia in their second Group A match on Thursday, February 12.
Medical tests are currently underway, and while there is hope for improvement, it appears unlikely that the left-handed opener will be fit in time for the Namibia fixture.
Team Management Monitoring Situation
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that a “tummy bug” was affecting the player but expressed optimism about a swift recovery.
In Abhishek’s absence, reports suggest that Sanju Samson is expected to open alongside Ishan Kishan. The team management remains hopeful that the aggressive batter will recover in time for the high-voltage clash against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo.
Big Blow to India’s Title Defence?
Abhishek Sharma’s explosive form at the top of the order has been crucial to India’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. His absence could significantly impact the team’s batting strategy, especially with key matches approaching.
As the tournament progresses, fans and selectors alike will be closely monitoring updates on his health, hoping for a quick return to action.
