Ukraine Intensifies Drone Strikes on Russia’s Energy Infrastructure, Oil Facilities and Tankers Hit
Oil depots, fuel tankers and energy facilities were targeted in fresh overnight attacks as both sides exchanged waves of drones and missiles, further escalating the conflict.
Ukraine has intensified its drone campaign against Russia’s energy infrastructure, targeting oil depots, refineries, and fuel tankers in a series of overnight attacks that have further escalated the conflict between the two countries.
According to Russian officials, a Ukrainian drone strike triggered a fire at an oil depot in the western Russian city of Tver early Thursday. Acting regional governor Vitaly Korolyov said emergency services were deployed to contain the blaze.
In another major attack, Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted two oil tankers in the Sea of Azov, setting both vessels on fire. Rostov Governor Yuri Slyusar said one of the tankers continued to burn while its crew had been safely evacuated.
Meanwhile, authorities in Russia’s southern Stavropol region said a drone strike ignited an oil storage facility in Voznesenskoye. Governor Vladimir Vladimirov said nearby residents were evacuated after the fire spread close to residential buildings.
The latest attacks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump pledged to grant Ukraine a licence to produce Patriot air defence systems, a commitment reportedly made during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Turkey.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russia’s oil refineries, fuel depots, and energy infrastructure in recent months in an effort to disrupt fuel supplies supporting Moscow’s military operations. The repeated strikes have reportedly led to fuel shortages in several Russian regions, with reports of long queues at petrol stations and disruptions in fuel distribution.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed its air defence systems intercepted 73 Ukrainian drones between late Wednesday and Thursday morning.
Ukraine’s Air Force, meanwhile, said Russia launched 94 long-range strike drones and two ballistic missiles during overnight attacks. According to Kyiv, Ukrainian air defences intercepted 72 drones, while nine drones and both ballistic missiles struck their intended targets, causing damage at 13 locations across the country.
The exchange of large-scale drone and missile attacks highlights the continued escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides increasingly targeting strategic infrastructure and energy facilities.
