Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Hits Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand, Second Tremor in Four Days
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand on Saturday night, triggering panic among residents. The tremor marks the state's second earthquake in four days, with no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
The Himalayan state of Uttarakhand experienced another earthquake on Saturday night, October 10, as tremors were felt in the Uttarkashi region. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 4.2 on the Richter scale and occurred at around 8:08 pm.
There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties following the earthquake. However, the tremors triggered panic among residents, with people reportedly rushing out of their homes as a precaution.
The latest earthquake marks the second seismic event in Uttarakhand within four days, raising concerns among residents in the earthquake-prone Himalayan region.
Second Earthquake in Four Days
Uttarakhand experienced another earthquake on Tuesday, October 6. According to reports, the epicentre of that earthquake was located in Chamoli district.
Tremors were reportedly felt across several districts, including Chamoli, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Almora and Udham Singh Nagar, as well as other parts of the state.
The latest tremor in Uttarkashi has once again drawn attention to seismic activity in the Himalayan region, which is vulnerable to earthquakes due to its geological characteristics.
Tremors Felt in Yamunotri Valley
The earthquake on Saturday was reportedly felt in Uttarkashi town and the Yamunotri Valley. Residents experienced sudden shaking, prompting several people to leave their homes in fear.
According to available reports, the epicentre was located approximately 2 kilometres northwest of Uttarkashi, at a depth of around 11 kilometres below the Earth’s surface.
Purushottam Uniyal, a priest from Kharsali village, the winter seat of Yamunotri, said the tremors were strong enough to shake televisions inside homes.
He added that people were frightened by the sudden shaking and rushed outdoors for safety.
No Immediate Reports of Damage
Although the earthquake caused alarm among residents, no immediate reports of property damage or casualties had emerged at the time of reporting.
Uttarakhand falls in a seismically active part of the Himalayas, making earthquake preparedness and public awareness particularly important.
