Assam Floods Worsen: 21 Dead, Over 5.64 Lakh People Affected Across 16 Districts

The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated further, with widespread inundation affecting thousands of families across the state. According to the latest reports, 21 people have lost their lives in the past 24 hours, including 13 deaths in Sivasagar district, making it the worst-hit district.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that more than 5.64 lakh people have been affected by floods across 16 districts. The deluge has submerged 872 villages and inundated over 24,000 hectares of agricultural land, severely disrupting normal life. Floodwaters have entered residential areas, roads, and farmlands, leaving thousands displaced and forcing many families to take shelter in relief camps.

The worst-affected districts include Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Golaghat, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Biswanath, Kamrup, and Karbi Anglong, among others. Several roads have been cut off due to rising water levels, hampering transportation and relief efforts.

State authorities, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are continuing rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. However, the steadily rising water levels remain a major concern.

Responding to the worsening situation, the Indian Army has launched Operation Jal Rahat-3 at the request of the Assam government. Three specialised flood relief teams have been deployed in Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Charaideo districts to assist in rescue operations and provide humanitarian aid to stranded residents.

The floods have also dealt a severe blow to agriculture, with standing paddy and other crops suffering extensive damage, raising concerns among farmers about their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, continue to flow above the danger mark, worsening flood conditions across the state. Waterlogging has also persisted in Guwahati, disrupting daily life in the state capital.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow evacuation advisories as heavy rainfall and rising river levels continue to threaten more regions.
