India’s First Hydrogen Train May Be Extended to Delhi Amid Low Passenger Footfall
India’s first hydrogen train records low passenger footfall on the Jind-Sonipat route, prompting Railways to consider extending the service to Delhi.
India’s first hydrogen-powered train, which began operations in July 2026, has completed nearly two months of service, showcasing the technological capabilities of Indian Railways. However, the train has reportedly recorded lower-than-expected passenger footfall on its current route, prompting railway authorities to consider extending the service to Delhi.
The hydrogen train is currently operating on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. Despite having the capacity to carry around 2,600 passengers, only about 40 to 60 passengers are reportedly travelling on the train during its journey between Jind and Sonipat.
The hydrogen-powered train replaced the existing DEMU service on the route. According to railway officials, the passenger numbers were similar even on the earlier DEMU service.
Demand to Extend Train Service to Delhi
Railway authorities are now considering extending the hydrogen train service towards the national capital to improve its utilisation. Local residents have reportedly been demanding that the train be extended to Delhi, which they believe could increase its usefulness and attract more passengers.
A railway employee associated with the train’s operations said three other DEMU trains are currently running on the Jind-Sonipat route apart from the hydrogen-powered train. However, none of these services sees heavy passenger traffic.
According to the employee, the route does not have a significant number of office commuters or industrial workers travelling regularly between the two cities. As a result, passenger demand remains relatively low across the services operating on the route.
The proposed extension to Delhi could provide the hydrogen train with access to a larger commuter base and potentially improve passenger utilisation. However, the final decision on extending the service will depend on operational considerations and the assessment of railway authorities.
