Scrub Typhus Cases Rise to 910 in Sundargarh, 62 New Cases Reported

Sundargarh district in Odisha is witnessing a steady rise in scrub typhus cases, with the total number of infections reported since January this year reaching 910. As many as 62 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours, raising concerns over the situation, particularly in the urban areas of Rourkela.

Rourkela city has reported the highest number of cases in the district, with around 150 patients identified so far. Officials said that, unlike previous trends, more cases are currently being detected in urban areas compared to rural regions.

The Health Department has stepped up surveillance and awareness activities across the affected areas. A 24-hour control room has also been opened to monitor the situation and coordinate the response.

Despite the rising number of cases, no patient is currently reported to be in a serious condition. The in-charge District Chief Medical Officer said the situation remains under control.

Health Department Steps Up Surveillance

The Health Department is keeping a close watch on the scrub typhus situation in Sundargarh along with the diarrhoea outbreak reported in Rayagada district. Special medical teams have been deployed to the affected areas to assess the situation and collect information based on symptoms.

Officials said the actual situation will become clearer after ELISA and confirmatory test reports are received.

Meanwhile, measures have also been intensified to control diarrhoea in Rayagada. Authorities are focusing on the use of safe drinking water, while the Food Safety Department is checking the quality of food in the affected areas.

Awareness Drive Intensified

With the number of scrub typhus cases increasing, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers and health personnel are conducting awareness campaigns in villages and other affected areas.

People have been advised to wear full-sleeved clothes and keep their hands and legs covered while visiting forests, fields or other areas where exposure to mites may occur. Residents have also been urged to seek medical attention without delay if they develop symptoms such as fever.

Health officials said early detection, timely testing and appropriate treatment are important to prevent complications and control the spread of scrub typhus. The department continues to closely monitor the situation across Sundargarh district.
