A fresh low-pressure system is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal around October 13, raising the possibility of heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre. The system is developing under the influence of a cyclonic circulation currently active over the Gulf of Thailand and adjoining areas.

The cyclonic circulation extends up to 9.4 km above mean sea level and is expected to move into the Andaman Sea on October 11. Under its influence, a low-pressure area may develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal by October 13. However, the possibility of further intensification of the system remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next two days due to the cyclonic circulation and an associated trough line. The weather department has also forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places, particularly in coastal and interior districts, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Yellow Warning Issued for 21 Districts

The meteorological department has issued a yellow warning for 21 districts over the next 24 hours, forecasting lightning, thunderstorms, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–50 kmph.

The districts under the warning are Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balangir, Subarnapur, Boudh, Angul, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

Rainfall activity is expected to decrease from October 12, with no weather warning in place for that day. The department has also indicated that day and night temperatures are unlikely to undergo any significant change over the next seven days.

Puri Records 79.4 mm Rainfall

During the past 24 hours, Parlakhemundi recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 36.2 degrees Celsius, while Phulbani registered the lowest minimum temperature at 20.5 degrees Celsius.

Several districts received light to moderate rainfall. However, isolated places in Puri district in southern coastal Odisha experienced heavy rainfall. Puri recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 79.4 mm during the period.

Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Continues

The southwest monsoon is gradually withdrawing from Odisha. According to meteorologist Dr Rajashree, the withdrawal process is progressing through the Sundargarh and Bargarh districts.

With another low-pressure system likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal, weather conditions may become active again around October 13. Residents, particularly those in coastal and interior districts, are advised to follow official weather updates and exercise caution during thunderstorms and gusty winds.
