Cyclonic Storm May Intensify Over Bay of Bengal, Andhra Pradesh Coast on Alert
A depression over the Bay of Bengal may intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 26–28, with possible landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast and rainfall in southern Odisha.
A depression over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified, raising the possibility of a cyclonic storm in the coming days. According to the latest weather model projections cited in the report, the system is moving west-northwestwards and may approach the central Andhra Pradesh coast between Kakinada and Machilipatnam.
However, the exact landfall location, timing and intensity remain uncertain, with atmospheric conditions continuing to influence the system’s development.
Depression May Intensify Into Cyclonic Storm
Satellite observations and scatterometer data indicate that winds are circulating around a defined centre. Wind speeds are currently estimated at around 30–50 kmph.
The system could intensify into a cyclonic storm between Sunday evening and midnight. Some global weather models suggest that it may strengthen further over the west-central Bay of Bengal between October 26 and 28.
There is also a possibility that the system could intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. Some model projections indicate that the central pressure could fall to around 961–971 hectopascals, although the final intensity will depend on evolving atmospheric conditions.
Landfall Timing and Location Remain Uncertain
The cyclone may make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between the night of October 27 and October 28. However, meteorologists caution that both the timing and location could change as the system develops.
The next 24–36 hours will be crucial in determining its strength and movement. Even a relatively small change in the system’s initial position or the surrounding steering winds could significantly alter its track.
More reliable forecasts are expected once the depression becomes a well-organised cyclonic storm.
Southern Odisha May Experience Rainfall
If the system makes landfall along the central Andhra Pradesh coast, the risk of direct impacts from its strongest winds over Odisha may be lower. Nevertheless, Ganjam, Gajapati and adjoining districts of southern Odisha could experience rainfall and strong winds.
The potential impact will depend on the cyclone’s eventual intensity, size and track.
Farmers Advised to Protect Crops
Farmers have been advised to monitor official weather updates, protect harvested crops from possible rainfall and ensure proper drainage in agricultural fields to prevent waterlogging.
Authorities and residents are advised to follow updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as the forecast may change over the next one or two days.
