Air India Dreamliner Crashes in Ahmedabad, Killing 274: Nation Mourns Deadliest Aviation Tragedy in Decades
Catastrophic Crash Minutes After Takeoff
A routine international flight turned into a devastating tragedy on June 12, 2025, when Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft plummeted into the Meghani Nagar residential area at 1:42 p.m., killing 274 people, including 241 passengers and crew, and 33 residents on the ground.
Fireball Engulfs Doctors’ Hostel
The Dreamliner slammed into a doctors’ hostel at BJ Medical College, less than a mile from the runway, sparking a massive inferno. Fueled by the plane’s full long-haul fuel load, the explosion left a horrific trail of destruction, engulfing nearby structures and residents.
Authorities confirmed the death of 241 of the 242 on board, with Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, seated near an emergency exit in seat 11A, miraculously surviving. Five medical students were among those killed on the ground.
Mayday Call, Then Silence
According to aviation officials, the flight issued a mayday call just seconds after takeoff. Witnesses reported the plane struggling to gain altitude before it nose-dived into the densely populated area.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) launched a full-scale probe into the cause. Investigators recovered one black box — the flight data recorder — within 28 hours, offering critical insight into the final moments of the doomed flight.
Victims Include Former Gujarat CM
The flight was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. DNA testing is underway to assist in identifying victims’ remains, many of whom have already been transported to their hometowns for final rites.
National Emergency Response Activated
In the aftermath, six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, local fire brigades, and police rushed to the crash site. Rescue efforts were hampered by thick smoke and intense heat. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed the black box recovery, calling it “an important step forward in the investigation.”
Leaders Respond with Grief and Outrage
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the site personally, described the incident as “heartbreaking beyond words” in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My thoughts are with everyone affected.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, after inspecting the scene, remarked that the heat from the fuel left “no chance to save anyone.” His comments sparked backlash from opposition leaders, who accused him of insensitivity and attempting to downplay accountability.
Boeing 787 Safety Record Under Scrutiny
The tragedy has cast a harsh spotlight on Boeing’s safety record. Aviation expert Alex Macheras, speaking to Al Jazeera, noted, “The 787 has never been involved in a fatal crash in its 15 years of service,” raising pressing questions about mechanical failure, pilot error, or external factors.
Nation Demands Answers
As grieving families await answers, pressure mounts on the government and aviation regulators to determine what led to India’s deadliest air disaster in decades. With black box analysis underway and international aviation experts called in, the nation watches closely, demanding reforms and reassurance that such a catastrophic failure will never happen again.
