Kelucharan Mohapatra Award Festival 2025 Concludes on a Grand Note

The curtains came down on the 31st Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra (GKCM) Award Festival at Rabindra Mandap, Bhubaneswar, with a spectacular evening of recognition and performance. Organized by Srjan, the festival celebrated over three decades of artistic excellence with four days of dance, music, and theatre.

Award Ceremony Honours Stalwarts

The concluding evening began with the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award 2025, conferred on two veterans of Odissi:

• Smt. Madhavi Mudgal – acclaimed Odissi dancer, choreographer, Guru, and Padma Shri awardee.

• Shri Alekh Chandra Samal – eminent Odissi vocalist and educator.

Both received a cash prize of ₹1,00,000/- along with a citation.

The Yuva Pratibha Samman 2025, recognizing young artistes under 40, was awarded to:

• Smt. Shatabdi Mallick (Odissi dance)

• Shri Muralidhar Swain (Odissi music)

Each received ₹25,000/- and a citation.

New Category: Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Kala Samman

For the first time, Srjan introduced the Kala Samman, aimed at recognizing artistes aged 40–55 who have made notable contributions to their fields. This year’s recipients were:

• Shri Raghunath Das

• Shri Arnab Bandyopadhyay

Both were honoured with ₹50,000/- and a citation.

Premiere of Duryodhana by Srjan Ensemble

The highlight of the evening was Srjan’s much-anticipated production, Duryodhana, choreographed by Guru Ratikant Mohapatra. The work reimagined one of the Mahabharata’s most controversial figures, portraying Duryodhana not merely as an antagonist but as a complex leader embodying both virtues and flaws.

The choreography captured key moments, including:

• Krishna’s cunning advice leading to Duryodhana’s fatal vulnerability.

• His courage in facing Bhima’s final challenge despite impending defeat.

Conceptualized by Dr. Srinibas Ghatuary, scripted by Pt. Nityananda Misra, and musically composed by Shri Rupak Kumar Parida, the production blended narrative, rhythm, and movement into a deeply philosophical interpretation.

Stellar Performances and Stagecraft

The ensemble—featuring Rajashri Praharaj, Aishwariya Singhdev, Preetisha Mohapatra, G. Sanjay, Madhabi Rout, Daina Ghose, Rajkumar Kar, Pallishree, Subhashree Senapati, Prachi Mohanty, and Srutijyoshna Dash—brought the choreography alive with agility, expression, and grace.

The visual appeal was enhanced by:
