Raghu Rai began his professional journey in 1965 at the age of 23. In 1966, he joined The Statesman as its chief photographer and remained associated with the publication for nearly a decade. Later, he worked as a picture editor for a weekly publication in Kolkata.

In 1982, he entered a new phase of his career by joining India Today as picture editor, visualizer, and photographer, further cementing his legacy in Indian media.

Recognition and Global Honors
His exceptional work earned him the prestigious Padma Shri in 1972 for documenting significant events such as the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and the plight of Bangladeshi refugees.

In 1992, he received a major photography award in the United States, and in 2009, the French government honored him with the Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters for his contribution to photography.

International Recognition and Magnum Photos
Rai’s talent was recognized globally when legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson nominated him to join Magnum Photos, one of the world’s most prestigious photography agencies. This association further elevated his international stature.
