Low Pressure Area Forms Over Southwest Bay of Bengal
IMD Predicts Further Intensification as Rain and Thunderstorm Activity Likely to Increase in Odisha
Weather System Develops Near Sri Lanka Coast
A low-pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the northern Sri Lanka coast, according to the latest update from the Meteorological Department (India Meteorological Department). The system has developed due to a cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere.
The weather system extends up to an altitude of about 5.8 km above sea level and is expected to gradually intensify over the next 48 hours.
Possibility of Further Intensification
Experts have indicated that the system may strengthen further and move towards a more organized weather pattern. However, the IMD has not yet confirmed whether it will develop into a cyclone or its exact direction of movement.
Meteorological Expert Analysis
Senior agricultural meteorologist Prof. Surendranath Pasupalak stated that there is a high probability of another low-pressure system forming between May 11 and May 13 over the southwest to central Bay of Bengal region.
He added that by mid-May, the system could intensify into a depression. However, its evolution into a cyclone remains uncertain due to varying atmospheric conditions.
Ocean and Atmospheric Conditions
Current environmental conditions appear partly favourable for cyclone formation. Sea surface temperatures are recorded between 30–31°C, while mid-level atmospheric humidity is around 65–75%.
However, factors such as vertical wind shear and other atmospheric disturbances may hinder further intensification of the system.
Impact on Monsoon and Weather in Odisha
The formation of the low-pressure system is expected to support the advancement of the southwest monsoon.
In Odisha, weather conditions are likely to become more active in mid-May, with increased chances of thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and heavy rainfall. Coastal districts may also experience rough sea conditions and higher wind speeds, along with humid weather.
Rain and Thunderstorm Activity Forecast
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph may occur in northern and coastal Odisha on Monday. Scattered rainfall is also expected on May 12 and 13 in several parts of the state.
Temperature and Local Weather Conditions
Temperatures across Odisha remained below 40°C, with Nuapada recording 39°C and Sonepur 38.8°C as the highest. Several regions, including Bhubaneswar, experienced afternoon rainfall due to local thunderstorm activity.
