Shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with 90–95% Burns

A 20-year-old woman pursuing her second year of B.Ed at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore is in critical condition at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after setting herself ablaze on Saturday. According to doctors, she suffered 90 to 95 percent burn injuries and is currently on 98 percent oxygen support in the ICU. Due to her fragile condition, she cannot be shifted to any other medical facility, including AIIMS Delhi, despite the Odisha government’s offer to airlift her for further treatment.

Alleged Harassment by Principal Sparked Protest

Sources said the student allegedly attempted self-immolation on the college premises by pouring kerosene over herself to protest against harassment by the college administration. The principal of the institution is under the scanner, with serious allegations of academic threats and intimidation being levelled against him. Police have begun questioning individuals connected to the case to determine the sequence of events that led to the incident.

Father Blames College Authorities

Speaking to The Indian Express, the student’s father held the college principal responsible, alleging that the administration had made false promises and ignored repeated complaints. “We were fooled with sweet words. We will demand severe action against him,” he said. He also criticised the head of the education department, claiming that officials had consistently failed to act on past complaints. “I believe in God, and he will judge,” he added, overwhelmed by the condition of his daughter, who he said is now unrecognisable due to the injuries.

Public Outcry and Demand for Action

The incident has triggered widespread outrage in Balasore. Students and local residents have staged protests demanding accountability and strict action against the college authorities. Meanwhile, police continue their investigation, and doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar are making all efforts to stabilise the young woman’s condition.
