The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory to all private satellite television channels in India, directing them to follow stricter guidelines while broadcasting sensitive news content. The advisory urges broadcasters to avoid live coverage of anti-terror operations, exercise caution while showing violent visuals and refrain from airing content that promotes anti-national sentiments or hatred against any community.

The ministry has also advised television channels to avoid excessively graphic or disturbing visuals while reporting on crimes, accidents and natural disasters. The guidelines aim to ensure responsible news coverage while protecting public sensitivity and national security.

Restrictions on Terror Operations and Violent Content

According to the advisory, television channels should refrain from providing live coverage of anti-terror operations, as such broadcasts could potentially affect operational security.

Broadcasters have also been instructed to exercise caution while airing violent scenes and disturbing footage related to criminal incidents, accidents and natural disasters.

The ministry has further emphasised the need for responsible discussions during debates and panel programmes. Channels must ensure that their content does not promote hatred against any religion, community or group, or encourage anti-national sentiments.

Accurate Maps and Protection of Victims’ Identities

The advisory makes the use of official and accurate maps of India mandatory during television broadcasts.

The ministry has also reminded broadcasters to protect the privacy and safety of victims in cases involving sexual harassment and other crimes. Television channels must not disclose victims’ identities in situations where such disclosure is prohibited or could compromise their privacy and security.

These guidelines are intended to promote responsible reporting and prevent the unnecessary exposure of sensitive personal information.

Ministry Cautions Against Misuse of Artificial Intelligence

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has also raised concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI in news production.

According to the advisory, AI tools may be used as supporting resources for graphics, virtual presentations and video editing. However, broadcasters must ensure that the use of these technologies does not compromise the accuracy or authenticity of news content.

The ministry has stressed that factual integrity must remain a priority, regardless of the technology used in producing or presenting news.

Strict Compliance with Programme Code Mandatory

The ministry has directed all private satellite television channels to strictly comply with the Programme Code prescribed under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994.

The advisory reiterates the responsibility of broadcasters to maintain professional standards, ensure accuracy and exercise caution while reporting on sensitive issues.

With the latest directions, the ministry has underscored the importance of responsible television journalism, particularly when covering national security operations, violent incidents, communal issues and developments involving vulnerable individuals.
