Possible Cyclone in Bay of Bengal: Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Watch
Some international weather models suggest a possible low-pressure system could intensify over the Bay of Bengal and move towards Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, but the IMD has not confirmed cyclone formation.
Talk of a possible cyclone developing over the Bay of Bengal has intensified, with some international weather forecasting models suggesting that the system could move towards the coasts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet issued any confirmed forecast indicating cyclone formation.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently active over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the north Tamil Nadu coast. The system extends up to approximately 5.8 kilometres above mean sea level. According to preliminary assessments, it may develop into a low-pressure area around October 23.
The system could bring rainfall to several parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next three days. Some areas may experience heavy rainfall, while other locations could receive light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms.
Foreign Weather Models Indicate Possible Intensification
Some international weather forecasting models suggest that the system could gradually intensify in the coming days. According to these projections, it may develop into a depression by October 27 and move towards the central Bay of Bengal.
Certain model projections also indicate the possibility of the system crossing the coast between north coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha towards the end of October.
However, these are preliminary projections, and the system’s future development, intensity and movement remain uncertain. It is too early to determine whether it will strengthen into a cyclone or make landfall along the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh coast.
IMD Monitoring the Situation
The IMD has not yet confirmed the formation of a cyclone. The development and movement of the system will depend on atmospheric and oceanic conditions over the coming days.
Residents of coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are advised to follow official weather updates and warnings issued by the IMD rather than relying solely on forecasts from international weather models.
A clearer picture of the system’s intensity and possible track is expected to emerge as meteorological agencies continue monitoring its development.
