India Allows E100 Flex-Fuel Vehicles Under Revised Motor Vehicle Rules
India revises Central Motor Vehicles Rules to permit flex-fuel vehicles running on up to 100% ethanol, potentially reducing crude oil imports and promoting cleaner fuel alternatives.
India has amended its Central Motor Vehicles Rules to allow flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on petrol blended with up to 100% ethanol (E100). The move could pave the way for the launch of E100-compatible vehicles in the Indian market, with some automobile manufacturers reportedly preparing to introduce such models in the coming months.
The revised rules include E85 and E100 fuel options in the vehicle emission framework, supporting the country’s efforts to promote alternative fuels and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.
What Are E85 and E100 Vehicles?
Flex-fuel vehicles are specially designed to run on different combinations of petrol and ethanol using the same fuel tank.
E85 contains approximately 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, while E100 refers to fuel consisting almost entirely of ethanol. These vehicles require specially designed engines and fuel systems to operate safely and efficiently.
The revised regulations recognise these fuel options, potentially encouraging automobile manufacturers to develop compatible vehicles.
Regular Petrol Cars Cannot Use E100
The new rules do not mean that all existing petrol vehicles can run on E85 or E100. Vehicles designed for conventional petrol or E20 cannot automatically use higher ethanol blends.
Only vehicles specifically designed and certified for the relevant fuel can use E85 or E100. Consumers must check their vehicle’s fuel compatibility before using these blends.
How Will E100 Benefit India?
Greater ethanol use could help reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil and support domestic fuel production. Ethanol may also offer emissions benefits under suitable operating conditions, although the overall environmental impact depends on its production and use.
Countries such as Brazil and the United States have already adopted flex-fuel technology.
E100 Cars May Arrive Soon
The regulatory change could encourage manufacturers to introduce E100-compatible vehicles. However, fuel availability, vehicle prices, mileage and refuelling infrastructure will influence their adoption.
The initiative represents another step towards expanding India’s alternative-fuel options and strengthening energy security.
