Lok Seva Bhawan Declared Tobacco-Free Zone in Odisha

Tobacco consumption has been prohibited across the Lok Seva Bhawan premises in Odisha as the state government has declared it a ‘Tobacco-Free Zone’. The move aims to protect public health and create a clean and healthy working environment.

The Health and Family Welfare Department has issued an official notification in this regard.

Smoking and Tobacco Consumption Banned

As per the new rules, smoking, consumption of tobacco products and spitting tobacco on the Lok Seva Bhawan premises have been completely prohibited.

Anyone found violating the restrictions will face penalties as prescribed under the law. Authorities are expected to ensure strict enforcement of the new regulations across the premises.

Tobacco Use Linked to Serious Health Risks

The notification highlighted the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. Tobacco use is a major risk factor for several non-communicable diseases, including cancer, heart disease and lung-related illnesses.

According to the notification, around 1.3 million people die every year in India due to tobacco use, underlining the need for stronger measures to discourage tobacco consumption and promote healthier public spaces.

What Did Health Minister Say?

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling said the primary objective of the initiative is to transform Lok Seva Bhawan into a clean, healthy and tobacco-free workplace.

He said the government will continue its efforts to strengthen the objectives of the ‘Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat’ initiative and the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan’, while spreading the message of healthy living among the younger generation.

Following the declaration of Lok Seva Bhawan as a tobacco-free zone, emphasis will now be placed on strict compliance with the regulations. The move is aimed at encouraging a healthier and cleaner environment within the state’s key administrative premises.
