Puri Administration Tightens Crackdown on Adulterated Khaja

The Puri district administration has stepped up action against adulterated and unhygienically prepared khaja, a popular traditional sweet associated with the pilgrim city. The move comes ahead of the upcoming festive and tourism season, with authorities focusing on the health and safety of devotees and tourists.

Strict Action Against Violators

Following raids conducted on khaja preparation units, the Puri Municipal Corporation has warned traders of strict action if food safety rules are violated.

Two warehouses have already been sealed during the enforcement drive. Authorities have warned that shops or warehouses found violating the rules for a second time could face complete sealing and a ban on operations.

The district administration has also said that raids will continue to prevent the preparation and sale of adulterated khaja and to ensure hygienic conditions at production units.

Restrictions on Khaja Vendors

The administration has also imposed restrictions on the sale of khaja from roadside pushcarts. Only traders registered with the municipal corporation and possessing valid food safety certification will be permitted to sell khaja.

The move is aimed at bringing greater accountability to the khaja trade and preventing the sale of adulterated products to visitors.

Traders Step Up Hygiene Measures

Following the recent raids, khaja sellers have reportedly started taking additional precautions. Khaja is being packed using laminated plastic covers to protect it from dust and maintain hygiene while being sold to tourists, devotees and customers.

Demand for Khaja Cluster

Meanwhile, khaja traders have demanded the creation of a dedicated khaja cluster in Puri. The proposed cluster would bring khaja shops and preparation units under one roof, making it easier to monitor production standards, hygiene and food safety.

Administration Keeps Units Under Watch

Four khaja preparation units have been raided so far. The district administration is now keeping a close watch on around 30 to 35 khaja preparation units operating across the city.

With the festive and tourist season approaching, authorities are expected to intensify inspections to ensure that visitors to Puri receive safe and hygienically prepared khaja.
