Low-Pressure Area Likely Over Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rain Forecast Across Odisha for Five Days

A cyclonic circulation is currently active over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh, raising the possibility of the formation of a low-pressure area over the region.

According to the weather department, the circulation is extending up to around 7 km above mean sea level and is tilted towards the southwest. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and North Odisha within the next 24 hours.

The developing weather system is expected to trigger widespread rainfall across Odisha. The state is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next five days, according to the forecast.

Orange Alert for Three Districts

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an Orange Alert for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall until 8:30 AM tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Koraput and Malkangiri for heavy rainfall.

The weather system may lead to intense spells of rain in several parts of the state, particularly along the northern and coastal districts.

Authorities have advised people in the alerted districts to remain cautious, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and localised flooding. The situation will continue to be monitored as the low-pressure system develops over the Bay of Bengal.
