Good News for Malkangiri: Regular Flight Services Likely by March End
State gears up for passenger flight operations as inspection and trial run preparations gain momentum
Regular Flights to Begin Soon
In a major boost for connectivity, residents of Malkangiri district are set to get regular flight services by the end of March. Preparations are in full swing to operationalize passenger flights from the Malkangiri Airport.
High-Level Teams Conduct Inspection
A high-level team from the state government, along with a technical team from IndiaOne Air, recently visited the airport to assess its readiness. The team was led by Civil Aviation Advisor Suresh Chandra Hota and Security Advisor Manoj Kumar Dash.
They carried out a detailed inspection of the airport, reviewing infrastructure and operational preparedness.
Focus on Runway Safety and Facilities
The technical team, including pilots and aviation experts, examined key aspects such as the runway and other essential facilities. Special emphasis was laid on strengthening safety measures to prevent animals from entering the runway area. The Works Department has been directed to further reinforce these arrangements.
Trial Run Expected Before Launch
Sources indicate that a trial run of passenger aircraft by IndiaOne Air is expected shortly. Efforts are being intensified to ensure that regular commercial flight operations begin before the end of March.
Airport Inaugurated in January 2024
The Malkangiri Airport was inaugurated on January 9, 2024. Following its inauguration, the district was connected via air routes, initially with non-scheduled (cargo) flight services.
Expansion Plans and Infrastructure Details
Built over approximately 233 acres, the airport features a runway measuring 1,620 meters in length and 30 meters in width. Around ₹70 crore has been invested in its development.
Plans are also in place to extend the runway up to 3,000 meters in the future, which will allow for larger aircraft operations.
Boost to Regional Connectivity
The airport is capable of handling medium-sized aircraft and has been fully funded by the state government. With Malkangiri now joining cities like Bhubaneswar, Jharsuguda, Jeypore, Utkela, Rourkela, and Rangeilunda in the state’s aviation network, the move is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and economic growth.
Officials also noted that the airport is larger in size compared to Jeypore and Utkela airports, with scope for further expansion if required.
