Naseeruddin Shah Criticises Government, Says ‘I Am Proud to Be an Intellectual Naxal’
Naseeruddin Shah Targets Government, Says “I Am Proud to Be an Intellectual Naxal”; Raises Concerns Over Democracy, Student Protests and Freedom of Expression.
Veteran Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah has criticised the government over issues concerning democracy, educational institutions and student movements. In a video message, the actor declared, “I am proud to say that I am an intellectual Naxal,” responding to those who label critics of government policies as anti-national.
Shah expressed concern over what he described as attempts to undermine the autonomy of educational institutions and suppress the voices of young people. He referred to student protests at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) and Jamia Millia Islamia while highlighting the importance of student activism in a democracy.
Shah Targets Government and IT Cell
The veteran actor also criticised sections of the media and the ruling party’s IT cell. He argued that young people would not easily lose their courage despite pressure and attempts to silence dissent.
According to Shah, students play a crucial role in protecting democratic values, and their voices should not be dismissed simply because they question government policies.
Supports Student Movements
In his video message, Shah recited lines by revolutionary poet Bismil Azimabadi, warning that the country would not forget the alleged mistreatment of students.
He also expressed support for student protests at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute over infrastructure and academic policy issues. Additionally, he backed demands for student union elections at Jamia Millia Islamia.
His remarks have brought renewed attention to debates surrounding freedom of expression, student politics and the independence of educational institutions in India.
Debate Over Freedom of Expression
Shah’s comments have added to the ongoing discussion about the space available for dissent in a democracy. His remarks highlight concerns raised by critics regarding the treatment of student protesters and those who challenge government policies.
The actor’s statement is likely to fuel further debate over the role of students, freedom of speech and the responsibility of educational institutions to protect independent thinking.
