Ganjam district has been severely affected by Cyclone Arnab, with incessant rainfall triggering floods and leaving 22 villages marooned. Patrapur block recorded an exceptionally high rainfall of 546 mm, while several areas remain inundated.

Dharakote, Sanakhemundi, Purushottampur, Pandia and Sorada are among the worst-affected areas. In two villages in Dharakote block, residents have reportedly taken shelter on rooftops as floodwater entered their homes.

According to reports, around 42,500 people have been affected across 22 blocks, 208 gram panchayats, 299 villages and 18 urban areas. More than 11,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations.

Helicopter Rescue Plan

The administration is intensifying rescue operations to evacuate people trapped in flooded areas. However, rescue efforts using boats have faced difficulties. The state government is in touch with the Centre to arrange helicopter assistance if required.

Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari said the Navy and Air Force could also be deployed if the situation demands. Gopalpur’s Gothapatna has been identified as a nodal centre for coordinating rescue operations. However, dense cloud cover is affecting helicopter operations.

The number of ODRF teams in Ganjam has been increased from 27 to 52. Additionally, 35 fire service teams, 16 extra boats, five high-powered pumps and 25 private boats have been deployed.

Rushikulya River Raises Concern

The water level of the Rushikulya River at Purushottampur is expected to rise, potentially crossing the danger mark. Authorities have warned of possible risks to riverside areas.

Despite the challenging situation, Minister Pujari stated that Ganjam is not in a rainfall-related danger zone, while relief and rescue operations continue across the district.
