Devotees participating in Odisha’s Rath Yatra may have to pull the chariots under wet conditions, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across the state over the next seven days.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the monsoon will remain active due to a cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. The weather system is currently located at an altitude of 4.5 to 4.8 kilometres above mean sea level, enhancing rainfall activity across Odisha.

The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in several districts over the coming week, with heavy rainfall likely to occur from July 13 onwards in parts of the state.

Yellow Warning Issued for Several Districts

During the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain is expected at many places across Odisha. The IMD has also issued a Yellow Warning for Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh. These districts may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph.

Authorities have advised people to remain alert during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning activity.

Heavy Rain Likely Next Week

The weather department has warned that rainfall intensity is likely to increase from July 13, with isolated places expected to receive heavy rainfall. The continuous showers may affect outdoor religious events, including Rath Yatra celebrations in different parts of the state.

Advisory for Fishermen

In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until conditions improve. Coastal residents and those living in low-lying areas have also been urged to stay updated with official weather advisories.

The Regional Meteorological Centre said it will continue to monitor the weather system closely and issue further updates as required.
