TRAI Pushes Voice and SMS-Only Recharge Plans for Prepaid Users

TRAI pushes voice and SMS-only recharge options, giving prepaid users greater flexibility and reducing the need to pay for unused data services.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced provisions aimed at giving prepaid mobile users more flexibility in choosing recharge plans, particularly those who have little or no requirement for mobile data.

Under the new framework, telecom operators offering bundled plans with voice, SMS and data for a validity of 30 days or less are required to offer a corresponding voice and SMS-only plan with the same validity. The move is expected to benefit customers who primarily use their mobile phones for calling and messaging.

Data-Free Recharge Options

The new provisions will have an impact on major telecom operators, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi). Customers who do not regularly use mobile data will be able to opt for plans that focus only on voice calls and SMS.

However, telecom operators will continue to decide the pricing and other features of these plans within the regulatory framework. The change is intended to provide consumers with more choices instead of requiring them to pay for data services they may not use.

Monthly Recharge on the Same Date

Another important provision relates to monthly recharge plans. Telecom operators are required to offer at least one voice and SMS-only plan that can be renewed on the same date every month.

If a particular date does not exist in a given month, the recharge can be renewed on the last day of that month. The provision is aimed at making monthly recharge cycles easier for consumers to understand and manage.

Focus on 30-Day Validity

TRAI has also emphasised the availability of recharge options with a 30-day validity. Many existing telecom plans have a 28-day validity, which can result in consumers having to recharge more frequently over the course of a year.

The new provision does not mean that all existing 28-day plans offered by Jio, Airtel or Vi will automatically be converted into 30-day plans. Instead, operators are required to provide the prescribed recharge options while retaining flexibility in designing their overall tariff portfolio.

More Voice and SMS-Only Choices

The provisions are not limited to shorter-duration plans. For longer-duration data-bundled plans, telecom operators are also required to provide corresponding voice and SMS-only options with the same validity.

According to TRAI, the move addresses the limited availability of standalone voice and SMS tariff vouchers in the market. It is aimed at expanding choices for consumers who have low data usage and are more conscious of their mobile expenses.

What Jio, Airtel and Vi Users Need to Do

Consumers do not need to complete any additional process to benefit from the changes. Telecom operators will make the necessary adjustments to their recharge portfolios in accordance with the regulatory provisions.

As new plans become available, customers are advised to check the price, validity, voice calling benefits, SMS allowance and data benefits before making a recharge. This will help them select a plan based on their actual usage requirements.
