Uncertainty Over Possible Cyclone in Bay of Bengal; Thunderstorm Alert Continues in Odisha

No Clear Cyclone Signal Yet

Fears of a possible cyclone in the Bay of Bengal have resurfaced this May, but weather experts say the situation is not yet clear. The India Meteorological Department has not issued any official cyclone warning so far.

According to global forecast models, a cyclonic circulation may develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas between May 11 and 15. This system could later intensify into a low-pressure area, but current atmospheric conditions are not yet favorable for cyclone formation.

Weather Likely to Become Favorable After May 11

Meteorologists suggest that conditions may turn favorable around May 11, increasing the chances of the system intensifying further. However, weather expert Surendranath Pasupalak stated that the cyclone scenario is still uncertain and needs close monitoring.

Kalbaisakhi Storms to Continue Across Odisha

Meanwhile, the impact of Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester storms) will persist across Odisha until May 11. A trough line extending from Chhattisgarh to Manipur, passing through an existing cyclonic circulation over interior Odisha, is intensifying weather activity in the region.

Orange Alert Issued for Heavy Rain and Lightning

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an Orange Alert for the next 48 hours, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. Wind speeds are expected to reach 50–60 km/h in several districts, including Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

Other districts remain under Yellow Alert, indicating moderate weather disturbances.

Fishermen Advised to Avoid Sea

Due to the likelihood of rough sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve.

Safety Advisory for Public and Farmers

Authorities have urged people to avoid going outdoors during thunderstorms and lightning. Residents are advised to secure loose objects and stay away from open fields, trees, and water bodies.

Farmers have also been requested to temporarily suspend agricultural activities during the alert period to ensure safety.
