US President Donald Trump has suffered a major political setback in the 2026 midterm elections, with his Republican Party losing control of Congress to the opposition Democratic Party. The election results have delivered a significant blow to Trump’s political influence, marking a major comeback for Democrats.

Although Trump was not personally contesting the elections, his face and political influence remained central to the Republican campaign. However, growing public dissatisfaction over the economy, inflation, rising fuel prices and the war with Iran appears to have worked against his party.

One of the biggest surprises came from South Carolina, where Democrats secured a historic victory by winning a US Senate seat that Republicans had held for nearly 28 years.

Democrats Pull Off Historic Victory in South Carolina

Democratic candidate Annie Andrews defeated Republican candidate Darline Graham in a closely watched Senate contest, delivering a major blow to Trump’s party.

Darline Graham was seeking to retain the Senate seat previously held by her late brother, Lindsey Graham. She had received Trump’s backing after being appointed to the position following her brother’s death.

Republicans had expected sympathy votes to work in Darline Graham’s favour. However, the election results turned out to be very different from expectations.

Annie Andrews’ victory is particularly significant because South Carolina has traditionally been a strong Republican state. The last time a Democrat won a US Senate election in the state was in 1998.

Trump Backed Darline Graham Despite Questions Over Experience

Following the sudden death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in July 2026, Trump supported his sister Darline Graham to fill the vacant Senate seat.

Despite her limited political experience and relatively low public profile, Trump encouraged her to contest the election for a full six-year term.

Darline Graham was subsequently appointed to complete her brother’s remaining term and secured the Republican nomination. However, questions about her political experience and preparedness for the role became major issues during the campaign.

Her Democratic opponent, Annie Andrews, a paediatrician, focused on healthcare access, affordability and the rising cost of living.

War and Inflation Become Major Issues

The election results also reflect growing public dissatisfaction with the Trump administration’s handling of economic and international issues.

Rising living costs, fuel prices, inflation and the ongoing war with Iran emerged as significant concerns among American voters.

The Democratic victory in South Carolina and gains in other key Senate and House contests have strengthened the party’s position in Congress. The results represent a major political challenge for Trump as he enters the next phase of his presidency.
