Heat Persists Despite Monsoon Arrival

A day after the southwest monsoon entered Odisha through the northern part of the state, residents experienced an unexpected rise in temperatures instead of widespread rainfall. Five cities recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday, highlighting the slow progress of monsoon activity across the state.

Bhawanipatna emerged as the hottest place in Odisha with a maximum temperature of 41°C, followed by Balangir at 40.6°C, Hirakud at 40.5°C, Jharsuguda at 40.4°C, and Titlagarh at 40°C.

Monsoon Advances Slowly After Reaching Coastal Odisha

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the monsoon has slowed down after touching Odisha’s coastal regions. Weather officials said the southwest monsoon is likely to advance further into additional parts of Odisha over the next two to three days. It may also cover remaining areas of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and parts of northern Chhattisgarh during this period.

However, due to the sluggish pace of advancement, there is little possibility of any significant change in temperature across Odisha over the next seven days.

Widespread Rainfall May Take More Time

Weather expert Surendranath Pashupalak stated that while the monsoon has officially entered coastal Odisha, widespread and agriculturally beneficial rainfall may still be delayed.

He explained that the arrival of the monsoon does not necessarily guarantee immediate and uniform rainfall across all regions. Recent weather patterns in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh indicate that even after monsoon onset, many areas have received below-normal rainfall, affecting agricultural activities.

Lack of Strong Low-Pressure System Affecting Rainfall

Meteorologists point out that although eastern India currently has abundant moisture in the atmosphere, the absence of a strong low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is preventing the development of widespread rainfall.

As a result, rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued for the next few days despite the monsoon’s arrival. Only isolated and scattered showers are likely in some districts.

Farmers Await Reliable Monsoon Showers

The delayed onset of consistent rainfall could impact the commencement of agricultural operations in several parts of the state. Farmers are closely monitoring weather conditions as dependable monsoon showers are essential for the upcoming kharif cultivation season.

Weather experts have advised that while the monsoon has formally entered Odisha, people should not expect immediate widespread rainfall until stronger weather systems develop over the Bay of Bengal.

No Major Temperature Relief Expected Soon

With the monsoon’s progress remaining slow and rainfall activity limited, Odisha is likely to continue experiencing hot and humid conditions. Meteorological authorities have indicated that temperatures may remain largely unchanged over the coming week, prolonging discomfort in many districts despite the official arrival of the rainy season.
