Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal to Trigger Heavy Rain in Odisha Till August 16
Low-pressure system likely to intensify and move northwestward; IMD issues Red and Orange alerts as heavy to extremely heavy rain expected across Odisha.
A low-pressure area has formed over the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast and adjoining north Bay of Bengal, raising the likelihood of widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next several days.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and is tilting southwestward with height. The system is expected to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction during the next 48 hours.
Under its influence, rainfall activity is likely to continue across Odisha till August 16, with some districts expected to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The weather office has issued Red and Orange warnings for several districts over the next two days.
Red Alert for Balasore and Bhadrak
For Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for Balasore and Bhadrak districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall.
An Orange Warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Dhenkanal districts.
Apart from heavy rain, the low-pressure system may also trigger thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. Orange alerts for thunderstorm activity have been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul and Jagatsinghpur districts.
Keonjhar Under Red Alert on Thursday
For Thursday, Keonjhar district has been placed under a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall.
Orange Warnings for heavy rainfall have been issued for Balasore, Jajpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal and Mayurbhanj districts.
The weather office has advised people living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain cautious, as continuous rainfall may lead to waterlogging, localized flooding and disruption of normal life.
Fishermen Advised Not to Venture into Sea
The IMD has also warned that sea conditions along the Odisha coast will remain rough till August 14 due to the low-pressure system.
Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast during this period.
Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation, while district administrations have been asked to remain prepared to deal with any rain-related emergencies.
