Putin in ‘Do-or‑Die’ Mood: Russian Strikes Devastate British Council and EU Offices in Kyiv
Massive Russian Drone and Missile Strike on Kyiv Leaves Over 20 Dead
Deadliest Assault Since Peace Efforts in Alaska
In one of the most devastating attacks in recent months, Russia launched a massive overnight barrage of drones and missiles on Kyiv, killing at least 21–23 people and leaving widespread destruction. More than 600 drones and missiles were reportedly fired, striking residential areas, infrastructure, and diplomatic facilities, including the offices of the British Council and the European Union (EU).
Zelensky Condemns “Blatant Aggression”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly condemned the assault, saying Russia was deliberately choosing violence over diplomacy. He urged the international community to impose tougher sanctions, accusing Moscow of sabotaging peace initiatives.
International Outcry from UK and EU
The strike drew immediate condemnation from European leaders.
-
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy denounced the attack on social media.
-
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer directly blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for sabotaging peace by targeting civilians and demanded an end to the bloodshed.
-
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned of new sanctions, calling the strike a “flagrant violation of peace and democratic principles.”
-
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the attack once again revealed “the true face of Russia.”
Both the UK and EU summoned Russian ambassadors to formally lodge protests.
Damage to Diplomatic Premises
Although the British Council and EU offices suffered extensive damage, no staff members were injured. A night guard at the British Council was wounded, and both organizations have shifted operations to remote mode to maintain services.
Kyiv Retaliates with Drone Strikes
In retaliation, Ukrainian forces carried out drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, signaling Kyiv’s determination to respond firmly to Moscow’s escalating aggression.
Escalation After Failed Peace Summit
The attack came days after the failed peace summit in Alaska, which had aimed to revive negotiations. Analysts say the timing underscores Russia’s intent to derail diplomatic efforts and intensify the conflict. Western leaders view the assault as a calculated move by Putin to undermine peace and prolong the war.
