Scorching Heat and Humidity Disrupt Normal Life Across State

Odisha continues to reel under intense summer heat as scorching temperatures and unbearable humidity have made life difficult across the state. From western Odisha to coastal regions, the situation remains severe with people struggling to step out of their homes even during the morning hours.

The heat becomes intense as early as 7 AM in several cities, while humid conditions have further worsened the discomfort. According to the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, the prevailing south-westerly winds are contributing to the rise in temperature and humid weather conditions across the state.

Temperature May Rise by 3°C in Next Three Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that temperatures in Odisha may rise by another 3 degrees Celsius over the next three days, with mercury levels likely to touch 45°C in some areas.

After a brief relief due to Kalbaisakhi rain activity, the state is once again witnessing severe heatwave conditions. Weather experts said dry winds flowing from the northern region have reduced moisture levels in the atmosphere, leading to a steady rise in temperature.

The impact of Kalbaisakhi has also weakened in recent days, allowing the mercury to climb further.

Jharsuguda Hottest City in Odisha

On Monday, at least 17 cities in Odisha recorded temperatures above 40°C. Jharsuguda emerged as the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 43.4°C.

Cuttack recorded 39.6°C, while Bhubaneswar registered 39°C.

Kalbaisakhi Likely to Continue for Next Seven Days

Despite the heatwave, the IMD has forecast continued Kalbaisakhi activity across Odisha for the next seven days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely in several districts.

A yellow warning has been issued for 13 districts for the next 24 hours. Wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph along with lightning and thunderstorms are expected in these areas.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has advanced further, covering more parts of the Arabian Sea, the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and additional areas of the Bay of Bengal.

Storm Havoc Reported in Several Districts

Kalbaisakhi storms created havoc in different parts of Odisha on Monday evening. In Mayurbhanj district’s Karanjia area, several trees were uprooted and fell on State Highway-53, blocking traffic movement.

In Balasore too, strong winds and sudden storm activity caused widespread disruption, with trees collapsing in many places.

Reports suggest that trees also fell on moving bikes and bicycles in some areas. Due to fallen trees from Rasmatala to Mandua on the Karanjia–Thakurmunda road, both sides of the route were completely blocked, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.

Yellow Warning Issued Till May 24

The weather department has issued a yellow warning for Kalbaisakhi activity till May 24. People in vulnerable districts have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as Odisha faces a dual challenge of rising temperatures and storm-related disruptions.
