Three more prominent identities associated with the Shree Jagannath Temple and Lord Jagannath have received intellectual property protection from the Intellectual Property India (IP India) authorities.

The three identities are ‘Srimandir’, ‘Ratna Bhandar’ and ‘Srinahar’. With this development, the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri has become the first religious site in the country to receive such intellectual property protection.

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) had applied for trademark protection for 29 identities associated with the temple and Lord Jagannath. Of these, three more have now been accepted by the Trade Marks Registry for publication.

According to the details, ‘Srimandir’ has been accepted under Classes 19 and 45, while ‘Ratna Bhandar’ has been accepted under Classes 14 and 45. ‘Srinahar’ has been accepted under Class 19.

The trademark protection is aimed at safeguarding these historically and religiously significant names and identities from unauthorised commercial or other misuse.

Earlier, eight identities associated with the Shree Jagannath Temple had already received approval. With the addition of these three, the number of approved identities has increased further.

The move is being seen as an important step towards protecting the cultural, religious and intellectual heritage associated with Lord Jagannath and the centuries-old Shree Jagannath Temple.
